He got by his lessons easily enough, but he wasn't interested in much else, unless it helped bring money home to help our his caregivers.
It's only when he got much older, that he saw how things really were. How the knights would come to collect taxes and barely leave enough to get by. How they were unprotected by thieves or scoundrels coming in. And once he was old enough, he threw his first knight into the river. He was punished soundly for attacking the Empire.
It was worth it.
